Theatre owners in the state will go on a one-week strike starting March 25.Around 650 single-screen cinemas will remain closed for a week to protest against the huge entertainment tax, distributor and exhibitor,Ramesh Sippy, said.
If the government does not reduce the entertainment tax, more single-screen cinemas will shut down.None of the theatres are making profits, Sippy said.
Distributor Suniel Wadhwa rues the fact that hardly any content is being made for single-screen theatres these days.A Dabangg happens only once a year while films like Tanu Weds Manu and Saat Khoon Maaf do not generate substantial returns, he said.
Trade analyst A mod Mehra said,This is the best time for them to go on strikeas there is no content, they will not lose business and simultaneously, will be able to put pressure on the government.
Owners are demanding that the government allow them to demolish the cinemas. At present,it is mandatory for owners to retain a theatre onethird the size of the original if they demolish the cinema.
